A little about us and our history

We are Janet & Mick Woodard and we currently run The Arkleside with our daughter Hannah Woodard and her fiance Terry Hill. 

We moved to the Yorkshire dales from Kent in July 2002 where we successfully ran a three bedroom bed and breakfast in Middleham. In the two year period we were there we succesfully improved the star rating from 3 to 4 stars. In June 2004 we jumped at the opportunity to acquire "The Old Estate Yard" set in Jervaulx, home to the famous Jervaulx Abbey. Here we again improved the star rating from 3 to 4 stars and renovated one of the adjoining barns into a Holiday Cottage. As lovely as Jervaulx was, and still is, it was a little too quiet for us. It was for this reason in December 2006 we moved over to Ivy Cottage in Reeth. Ivy Cottage is a three bedroom bed and breakfast and tea room, located in the centre of Reeth overlooking the village green, making it a perfect new venture for us. After offering B&B for just one season in Reeth, we quickly realised that there was a lack of accommodation in the village. It was at this point in the Spring of 2008, after discussions with our daughter Hannah and her partner Terry that we decided to re-open The Arkleside as a joint family venture.  Hannah & Terry moved to Reeth from Kent in July 2008 and in August 2008 we welcomed new and returning guests back to The Arkleside.

Since re-opening in 2008 we have made improvements to many parts of The Arkle. We consistently ask for feedback so we can continue to offer the standard of accommodation and hospitality that we know is important to our guests.

No Smoking

We operate a strict no smoking policy in any part of the guesthouse. Any guest caught smoking or evidence found in the room after departure will be liable for a fine of up to £500 depending on the smell and damage left behind. We regret to have to take such an aggressive stance on this matter but this has been abused in the past.
